Pozzuoli, Italian comune

Pozzuoli is a coastal town near Naples that rises on a hill and features a working harbor with fishing boats and remnants of ancient buildings. The Rione Terra, its oldest quarter, contains narrow streets with structures from different periods, while modern cafes and small restaurants fill the streets.

The town was founded in the 2nd century BC and served as Rome's main trading port before Ostia took that role. Volcanic activity shaped its history, including earthquakes that forced evacuation of Rione Terra in 1970.

This town carries traces of different cultures that settled here over centuries. In the narrow streets of Rione Terra and around the harbor, you can see how history and daily life mix together, from ancient remains to lively fish markets and local festivals that shape community life.

Walking through the streets and to the harbor works best for exploring the town, where there is much to see. Reachable by bus and train from Naples, wear comfortable shoes for uneven ground and allow time to visit different areas without rushing.

The Solfatara is an active volcano where steam and sulfur gases still escape from the ground today and the site is open to visitors. In ancient times, people came here to benefit from the healing properties of the volcanic mineral waters.
