Fukuoka Mosque, Islamic center in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, Japan
Fukuoka Mosque is a place of worship in the Hakozaki area of Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, Japan. The multi-floor building has white walls with traditional Islamic design details and contains separate prayer halls for men and women, along with rooms used for community gatherings.
The mosque opened in 2009 as the first Islamic prayer facility on the island of Kyushu. It was built to serve a growing Muslim population in Fukuoka that had no dedicated place to pray or gather.
The mosque draws Muslims from across Japan and beyond, making it a meeting point for people of many nationalities. Visitors can observe how the prayer spaces are oriented toward Mecca, a detail that shapes the entire layout of the building.
Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome, but it is worth contacting the mosque in advance to confirm visiting conditions. Modest clothing is expected inside, and shoes should be removed before entering the prayer areas.
Inside the building, the Al Nour Islamic Cultural Center runs a library with texts about Islam in Japanese and several other languages. This makes it one of the few places in Kyushu where Japanese-language materials on Islamic traditions can be found in one spot.
