Mount Dainichi

Mount Dainichi rises to 2501 meters (8,206 feet) and features multiple hiking routes crossing varied terrain. The trails connect valleys, forested areas, and alpine zones throughout the Tateyama region.

The mountain gained religious importance in 717 when Buddhist monk Taicho first climbed its slopes. This early spiritual significance shaped it into a key site in the region's history.

The name comes from Buddhist tradition and refers to the deity Dainichi Nyorai, whose statue once graced the peak. Visitors can still sense this spiritual connection in how the place feels today.

The climb from Yabitsu Pass takes roughly three hours to reach the summit. Rest benches are available at the top, and several starting points offer options for different fitness levels and interests.

The mountain straddles two municipalities, Tateyama and Kamiichi, creating different approach routes and viewpoints. This split location makes exploring the peak from multiple angles rewarding.
