Midagahara

Midagahara is a tableland at about 1600 meters elevation featuring wetlands and volcanic rock formations. The landscape contains natural pools and vegetation shaped by volcanic activity and mountain springs.

The site gained protected status in 1980 as part of an international wetland conservation agreement. This designation has shaped how the area is managed and studied ever since.

The area is a place where researchers and scientists gather to study wildlife and geological features, reflecting its value for understanding nature. Today, locals and visitors see it as a protected natural space that deserves care and respect.

The best time to visit is during warmer months when the ground is drier and trails are easier to walk. Wear sturdy shoes since the terrain can be boggy and muddy in many areas.

Many bird species nest here at this high elevation, which is unusual for such altitudes. These bird populations are a key reason why the site receives protection.
