Shioe Tenmangū, Tenman-gū shrine in Kōchi, Japan

Shioe Tenmangū is a Tenman-gū shrine in the city of Kōchi, Japan, dedicated to Tenjin, the deity form of the scholar and poet Sugawara no Michizane. The grounds include a rope torii gate at the entrance and a main hall with a gently curved roof, sitting close to the Kagami River.

The shrine was founded in 905, making it one of the oldest places of worship in the Kōchi region. It has been renovated several times over the centuries to keep its buildings and rituals alive.

Many students visit the shrine before exams to ask Sugawara no Michizane for help with their studies. Wooden votive tablets called ema hang near the entrance, covered in handwritten wishes for success in school.

The shrine sits on the bank of the Kagami River and can be reached on foot from central Kōchi. A visit is usually short but pairs well with a walk along the riverbank nearby.

The site sits at a bend in the Kagami River, which is known locally for its clear water. Many visitors pause on the bank after praying before moving on.
