Southpot Shizuoka, Commercial and residential skyscraper in Suruga district, Japan
Southpot Shizuoka is a 25-story mixed-use tower in Suruga-ku, Shizuoka, Japan, housing offices, residential apartments, shops, and hotel rooms across its floors. The building stands directly next to Shizuoka Station's south exit, connected by a covered pedestrian bridge.
The building was completed in March 1997 as part of an urban redevelopment effort in the area south of Shizuoka Station. The project was intended to transform that part of the city into a more active urban zone.
The third floor is home to the Shizuoka Hobby Square, a display space dedicated to plastic model kits from manufacturers like Tamiya and Bandai. Both companies are rooted in the Shizuoka area, which has long been the heart of Japan's model kit industry.
The covered pedestrian bridge from Shizuoka Station's south exit means you can arrive without getting wet even on rainy days. Since the different uses are spread across separate floors, it helps to check which level you need before heading up.
The tower is divided into clearly separate vertical zones, with lower floors for residents, middle floors for office workers, and upper floors for hotel guests. This kind of strict vertical separation between different uses is not common in Japanese high-rise buildings.
