Wajiro Higata

Wajiro Higata, 일본 후쿠오카현 후쿠오카시에 위치하고 있는 개펄

Wajiro Higata is a mudflat and wetland area in Higashi Ward, situated next to Hakata Bay. The site stretches across a considerable distance and is flooded twice daily by the tides, creating a wide open expanse of soft mud and shallow water.

The area has long been part of the Fukuoka coast and has been used by local communities for generations to gather food and fish. The shape and extent of the mudflat have shifted over time through natural processes, but it remains a basic part of local life.

The name Wajiro Higata refers to the shallow mudflats exposed twice daily by the tides. Local fishing and shellfish-gathering traditions stretch back generations and remain part of how people connect with this coastal area today.

Visitors should wear suitable shoes since the mud can be soft and slippery, especially when wet. The area is accessible but has no large facilities or tourist buildings nearby, so it is wise to come prepared with water and protection from weather.

During migration seasons, the bird population can double as thousands of species like cranes and sandpipers stop to rest and feed here. At low tide, the mud reveals intricate patterns and textures that reshape themselves with each tidal cycle.
