Butsuryū-ji, Buddhist temple in Uda, Japan.

Description

Butsuryū-ji is a Buddhist temple in Uda housing important stone monuments, including a five-tiered stone structure and a thirteen-tiered stone pagoda dated to 1330. The grounds showcase a blend of religious architecture and stone craftsmanship that reflects its status as a designated cultural property.

History

Founded in 850 by Kenne, a disciple of Kukai, the temple initially served as the southern gate of Murouji Temple. This connection to early Buddhist centers in the region underscores the site's importance in Japanese religious history.

Culture

The temple played a key role in introducing tea cultivation to the Yamato region, with seeds and grinding tools arriving from Tang Dynasty China centuries ago. Local tea traditions still trace their roots to this early exchange that took place on the grounds.

Practical

The temple is reachable by bus from Kintetsu Haibara Station to Takai stop, followed by a walk through mountainous terrain. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow extra time for the uphill walk, especially in changing weather conditions.

Did you know?

The temple grounds contain a 900-year-old mountain cherry tree and 197 stone steps once framed by expansive beds of white spider lilies. This pairing of ancient nature and architecture creates a setting of remarkable historical continuity.
