Matabei-zakura, Historic cherry tree in Uda, Japan.
Matabei-zakura is a large weeping cherry tree with cascading branches that spread across the site and produce pale pink blossoms each spring. The tree stands on the former residence grounds of a samurai commander and serves as the centerpiece of the visitor area today.
The tree originated more than 300 years ago and grows on a site that was the home grounds of a powerful samurai leader during the Warring States period. This historical background makes the tree a living link to that distant past.
The tree takes its name from Goto Matabei, a figure in local legend who reportedly transformed from a warrior into a Buddhist monk at this location. This naming reflects how the place connects to the spiritual traditions of the region.
The best visiting time is early spring when the blossoms reach their fullness and the grounds are most photogenic. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the walk from the nearest bus stop requires some travel on foot.
Peach trees bloom at the same time as the main tree nearby, creating a two-toned flowering backdrop. This contrast between pink and white blossoms makes the season particularly striking to witness.
