Ōbara-dera temple ruins

Ōbara-dera temple ruins are the remains of a Buddhist sanctuary in Sakurai with stone foundations scattered across the site. At the center lies a base for a pagoda with extensive stone foundations of main halls and other sacred structures.

The sanctuary emerged during Japan's early Hakuhō period when Buddhism was taking root in the nation. Researchers uncovered the remains through excavation work that revealed the original layout and structure of the religious complex.

This site served as a place where Buddhist monks practiced their faith during Japan's early religious period. The way the buildings were arranged reflects how communities organized sacred spaces in those times.

The site is accessible through local transportation and sits near Sakurai Station with clear paths to the grounds. Visitors should keep in mind that the ruins are in an open area and protection from rain or intense sun may be necessary.

Archaeologists discovered ancient roof tiles at the site showing the sanctuary was built before the late eighth century. Despite this physical evidence, history has not preserved the temple's original name.
