Matsuyama, Historic preservation district in Uda, Japan
The district contains numerous traditional merchant houses known for their unusually wide street-facing facades and deep interiors, forming a distinct architectural pattern.
The area developed as a castle town during the Azuchi-Momoyama period under Hideyoshi's younger brother Hidenaga, later becoming a prosperous commercial center.
The district includes the Morino Former Medicinal Garden, established in the mid-Edo period and recognized as Japan's oldest private medicinal herb garden.
Visitors can access the district by taking a Nara Kotsu bus from Haibara Station on the Kintetsu Osaka Line to the Ouda bus stop.
The district features 128 traditional buildings and 88 structures spread across 17 hectares, with tax exemptions historically granted based on building frontage width.
