Taukkyan War Cemetery, Military memorial cemetery in Htauk kyant, Myanmar.
Taukkyan War Cemetery is a military burial ground holding over 6,000 Commonwealth soldiers arranged in orderly rows with white headstones. The grounds are maintained with formal gardens and a memorial hall, serving as the primary resting place for soldiers of multiple nations.
The cemetery was established in 1951 to consolidate graves from four World War II battlefields across Myanmar. This consolidation created a single memorial site for soldiers who had fallen in different regions.
The cemetery displays names and inscriptions in multiple languages to honor soldiers from different backgrounds and nations. This linguistic diversity reflects the international composition of those buried here.
The cemetery is located north of Yangon and accessible by road with straightforward directions. Visitors should dress respectfully and observe silence throughout the grounds.
Seven Victoria Cross recipients and one George Cross holder are buried here, representing the country's highest concentration of such highly decorated soldiers. This exceptional gathering of award recipients makes the site historically significant in ways many visitors do not realize.
