Lake Tekapo Regional Park

Lake Tekapo Regional Park is a 165 hectare park on the eastern shores of Lake Tekapo with forested terrain and mountains in view. The area includes lakeside landscapes and a network of marked trails for different activities.

The park was established in 2008 when Environment Canterbury converted the former Tekapo Station land into a public recreational area. This transformation opened the property to visitors and created new uses for what had been working farmland.

The name Takapō comes from Māori language and means 'to leave in haste at night', connecting the place to indigenous heritage. This link to the past shapes how people understand and value this landscape today.

The park offers more than 24 kilometers of trails for walking, running, and cycling across different terrain types. There is also a fenced dog park, swimming areas by the lake, and basic facilities for day visitors.

The area is marked by extensive conifer plantations from the 1950s that were originally planted to prevent soil erosion in the region. These forested areas shape the landscape today and provide shade along the trails.
