Nasla Tower, Demolished residential tower in Sindhi Muslim Housing Society, Karachi, Pakistan.
Nasla Tower was a 17-story residential building in the Sindhi Muslim Housing Society, located at the intersection of Shahra-e-Qaedin and Shahra-e-Faisal in central Karachi. The building housed around 44 families before it was demolished, and the plot now stands empty.
Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered the building's demolition in June 2021 after finding that the plot had been illegally enlarged. The structure was torn down in 2022, leaving the families who lived there with little time to relocate.
The demolition sparked a public debate in Pakistan about how buildings get approved and who is responsible when rules are broken. Many city residents see the empty plot today as a reminder of what happens when oversight fails.
The plot sits at a busy crossroads in central Karachi and is not open to visitors, as legal disputes over its future use are still ongoing. Those passing through the area can see the empty land from the street.
A senior official from the Sindh Building Control Authority was arrested in July 2023 for approving the unauthorized construction plans for the building. The arrest came more than a year after the demolition, keeping the case in the public eye long after the structure had disappeared.
