Kiz Kulesi, Rize

Kiz Kulesi is a medieval stone fortress on a rocky outcrop near Pazar along the Black Sea coast. The rectangular structure with its thick walls rises above the water in the style typical of fortified buildings from this period.

The fortress took shape during the era of the Trebizond Empire, possibly built with the help of Genoese builders. This period marked a critical time for controlling trade routes along the Black Sea coast.

The structure holds meaning for local Laz communities who connect it to figures from distant empires and historical power. Walking around the fortress, you can sense how the place connects the region to larger historical movements.

You can reach the structure most easily from Pazar, as it sits close to town and is visible from the water. It helps to wear shoes with good grip, since the stones can be slippery and uneven underfoot.

The building underwent careful restoration in 2013 using traditional stone techniques to preserve its original features. This work shows how historical sites can be protected while respecting their age and origin.
