Crescent Athletic Club House, Neoclassical athletic club house in Brooklyn Heights, United States
Crescent Athletic Club House is a neoclassical building in Brooklyn Heights that spans twelve levels with double-height windows framing its upper stories. The facade features a limestone base topped with light brick and decorated with terra cotta ornaments that enhance the classical design.
The building was completed in 1906 by architect Frank Freeman and served as an athletic club for the city's wealthy residents. Financial difficulties led to the club's closure in 1939, after which the structure found new uses.
Inside the building, classical-style murals decorate the hall and library, reflecting the artistic tastes of early twentieth-century social clubs. These decorative details show how members valued formal beauty and artistic expression in their gathering spaces.
The building is located at 129 Pierrepont Street at the corner of Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights. Since 1966, the school has occupied the space as the Bosworth Building, so access depends on school operations and events.
The building employs a clever visual design that tricks the eye into underestimating its true height of twelve stories. At first glance, the facade appears compact and low despite the substantial vertical space behind it.
