Brooklyn Trust Company Building
Brooklyn Trust Company Building, Bank building in Brooklyn Heights, United States.
The Brooklyn Trust Company Building at 177 Montague Street is a three-story structure with rusticated stone facades and double-height arches on multiple sides. Spanish tile covers the roof, while the exterior features carefully dressed stone blocks that create an imposing, substantial appearance.
The building was constructed in 1916 and served as headquarters for the Brooklyn Trust Company, which operated from 1873 until 1950. The institution was then absorbed through a merger with Manufacturers Trust Company, reshaping the regional banking landscape.
The structure reflects Italian Renaissance design language, drawing from Venetian palace architecture. This aesthetic choice made it a recognizable landmark in the Brooklyn Heights streetscape.
The ground floor now operates as a Chase Bank branch, while the upper levels have been converted into residential units. Visitors can view the banking hall's original interior through the public banking lobby.
The interior preserves its original Cosmati marble floors and yellow marble walls installed when the building was completed in 1916. The decorated vaulted ceiling in the banking hall is a testament to the craftsmanship of the era and catches the eye immediately upon entry.
