First Presbyterian Church, Gothic Revival church building in Brooklyn Heights, US
First Presbyterian Church is a Gothic Revival building in Brooklyn Heights featuring a 90-foot crenellated tower with pointed arch windows. The interior contains stained glass windows created by Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios that fill the space with colored light.
The congregation began in 1822 when wealthy merchants relocated from Manhattan to Brooklyn Heights. The present structure was built in 1846 as the neighborhood became an established residential area.
The congregation serves multiple community groups including those focused on shared faith, life stages, and identities. Visitors can observe how the space welcomes people from diverse backgrounds through its various programs.
The building sits in a well-preserved historic neighborhood with good walking access and nearby public transportation. Visitors should keep in mind that the church may be in use during services and community events throughout the week.
From 1949 to 1952, the church ran a program that brought together different faith traditions to build relationships across communities. This early initiative was ahead of its time in promoting cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.
