Hiddenwood National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in North Dakota, United States

Hiddenwood National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in North Dakota covering mixed grassland with wetlands and water bodies. Waterfowl, shorebirds, and white-tailed deer make their homes across the landscape, using different parts of it throughout the year.

The refuge was established through an easement system where private landowners retain their properties while the US Fish & Wildlife Service oversees conservation. This arrangement allows farming and wildlife protection to coexist on the same land.

Local farming families have shaped how this land looks and functions for generations. Their ongoing partnership with wildlife managers keeps both agricultural practices and natural spaces thriving together.

Visitors can watch wildlife, take photographs, hunt, or fish across different areas of the refuge. Weather changes quickly on the grassland, so wear layers and bring water when exploring any part of the landscape.

The James River created four distinct water bodies within the refuge that most visitors miss while focusing on the grassland. These lakes and marshes are where many migrating birds stop, making them the richest spots for observation.
