The octagonal sandstone tower rises 18 meters above the water at the entrance to Mobjack Bay in the Chesapeake Bay region.
Thomas Jefferson commissioned the construction of New Point Comfort Light in 1804, making it the third oldest lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay.
The lighthouse represents maritime heritage through its continuous service as a navigational aid for ships traversing the Virginia coastal waters since 1806.
Visitors can observe the lighthouse from two public viewing areas: the View Observation Walkway and Bayside Landing, both offering parking facilities.
The Hurricane of 1933 separated the lighthouse from the mainland, creating an isolated island structure that required boat access for maintenance.
