New Point Comfort Light

New Point Comfort Light is an octagonal sandstone tower standing 18 meters above the water at the entrance to Mobjack Bay in Virginia's coastal region. The structure features the solid stone construction typical of early 19th-century lighthouse design.

The lighthouse was commissioned in 1804 and ranks among the oldest structures on the Chesapeake Bay. It has endured numerous storms and remained in operation to guide ships safely through these waters for generations.

The structure holds significance for the region's maritime identity, serving as a visual reference point that generations of seafarers have relied on for safe passage. Its presence along the water reflects the deep connection between the local community and the Chesapeake Bay's shipping traditions.

The structure can be observed from two public access points: the View Observation Walkway and Bayside Landing, both offering parking. Visit during clear weather when pathways are dry and walking is most comfortable.

A major storm in 1933 separated the structure from the mainland, transforming it into a standalone island. Maintenance and access have required boat travel ever since that event.
