Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve, Freshwater research reserve near Sandusky, Ohio.
Old Woman Creek is a national estuarine research reserve located along the southwestern shore of Lake Erie in Ohio. It spans 573 acres and contains a mixture of freshwater marshes, wooded swamps, an upland forest zone, and barrier beach formations along the water.
The reserve received its official designation as a National Estuarine Research Reserve in 1980 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This protected status was established to safeguard one of only two freshwater estuaries found within the Great Lakes system.
Scientists from Heidelberg University contribute to extensive documentation of invertebrates within the reserve through detailed photographic atlases and research papers.
The reserve has a visitor center where you can learn about trails and observation areas within the protected zone. Walking along marked pathways is the best way to explore, especially during drier seasons when the ground is more accessible.
This location is one of only two freshwater estuaries protected within the United States National Estuarine Research Reserve System, making it exceptionally rare. Researchers from Heidelberg University conduct ongoing scientific documentation here, creating detailed photographic records of invertebrate species found nowhere else.
