Space Spiral, Observation tower at Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, US.
Space Spiral was an observation tower at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, featuring a two-level rotating cabin that climbed to around 330 feet (100 meters). The cabin turned slowly throughout the ride, giving guests on both levels a rotating view of Lake Erie and the park below.
The tower was built in 1965 by Willy Bühler Space Towers and ran for nearly five decades as one of the park's most recognizable rides. In 2012, it was brought down in a controlled demolition to clear the site for a new roller coaster.
For many repeat visitors, the tower was as much a part of Cedar Point as the roller coasters, and families often made it a regular stop during their day at the park. The slow, gentle rotation of the cabin gave it a different feel from the thrill rides around it, making it a place where people paused and took in the view together.
The tower no longer exists, having been demolished in 2012, so there is nothing to visit on the site today. Guests at Cedar Point will find the GateKeeper roller coaster where the tower once stood, near the main entrance of the park.
When the tower was demolished in 2012, it collapsed in just 17 seconds, a speed that surprised many who watched the event. The site was then used for the GateKeeper roller coaster, which opened the following year in 2013.
