Gemini, Dual-tracked roller coaster at Cedar Point, United States
Gemini is a roller coaster with two parallel tracks made of steel and wood at Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio. The vehicles reach speeds of around 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) over a course of roughly 3900 feet (1200 meters).
The company Arrow Dynamics built this installation in 1978 and introduced the concept of two trains running at once to the region. It was considered one of the largest roller coasters worldwide when it opened.
The name comes from the Latin word for twins and reflects the side-by-side tracks where trains run at the same time. Riders often cheer for their side and compare afterward which train finished faster.
Four separate trains allow many visitors to ride per hour and keep waiting times lower on days with large crowds. Those sitting in the front rows feel the acceleration especially during the first drop.
The construction combines wooden supports with steel rails and creates a ride that feels different from a pure wooden or steel coaster. This mix was still rare in the late seventies and later served as a model for other parks.
