Description

Johnson's Island Confederate Cemetery is a 1.2-acre burial ground containing 153 marked graves and 52 unmarked ones belonging to Confederate officers. The site overlooks Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie with simple stone markers identifying those laid to rest there.

History

From 1862 to 1865, this ground served as the final resting place for Confederate officers who perished while imprisoned at the Johnson's Island detention camp. The cemetery marks a chapter of the American Civil War era.

Culture

The United Daughters of the Confederacy donated the land to the United States in 1931 and erected a commemorative statue at the site in 1910.

Practical

The grounds are open to visitors during regular hours and provide dedicated parking areas. Volunteers are on hand to help locate specific graves if needed.
