Jane's Carousel, Historic carousel in DUMBO, Brooklyn, United States
Jane's Carousel is a vintage carousel with 48 carved wooden horses and two chariots, built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and housed in a contemporary glass pavilion near the East River. The structure sits within Brooklyn Bridge Park and combines the original rotating mechanism with modern protective architecture.
The carousel was first installed at Idora Park in Youngstown in 1922 before becoming forgotten for decades. In 1984, Jane and David Walentas purchased it at auction and launched a major restoration effort that eventually brought it to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The carousel reflects early 20th-century American craftsmanship through its detailed wood carvings by artisans like John Zalar and Frank Carretta. These carvings show the style that defined amusement parks across the country.
The carousel operates daily in Brooklyn Bridge Park and is easily accessible by subway. The glass enclosure keeps it open year-round, though weather can still affect your experience on windy or very cold days.
The protective glass pavilion was designed by celebrated architect Jean Nouvel, creating an intriguing contrast between vintage craftsmanship and modern design language. Riders can gaze toward the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge while experiencing the ride.
