Queensbridge Park, Urban park in Long Island City, New York, US
Queensbridge Park is an urban park along the East River in Long Island City, Queens, New York. It has sports fields, basketball courts, open lawns, play areas, and a waterfront promenade facing the Manhattan skyline.
The park opened in 1939 as part of the construction of Queensbridge Houses and was initially managed by the New York City Housing Authority. It was later handed over to the city Parks Department, which has run it ever since.
The park sits next to Queensbridge Houses, one of the largest public housing developments in the country, and the people who use it reflect the everyday life of that neighborhood. On weekends, families gather on the grass, teenagers play basketball, and older residents sit along the waterfront looking across the river toward Manhattan.
The park is easy to reach by subway, with the Queensboro Plaza station a short walk away, and several bus lines also stop nearby. The waterfront and open lawns are most pleasant in the morning or late afternoon when the sun falls directly on the Manhattan skyline across the river.
A seawall built along the waterfront in 2014 was a direct response to the flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which hit this stretch of the river hard. The wall now also serves as the base of the wide promenade that runs along the water.
