Strecker Memorial Laboratory, Research laboratory at Roosevelt Island, United States
The Romanesque Revival stone building features large arched windows across its two floors, with a detailed masonry exterior in the southern section of Roosevelt Island.
Built in 1892 through Strecker family funding, this facility served as the first dedicated pathological and bacteriological research institution in the United States.
The laboratory represents the advancement of medical research in New York City, marking a transition toward scientific methods in late 19th-century healthcare practices.
After restoration in 2010, the structure now functions as a power conversion substation for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Roosevelt Island train service.
The building maintains its original architectural features while concealing modern electrical equipment that powers the subway system beneath Roosevelt Island.
