BMO Tower, Commercial skyscraper in West Loop, Chicago, United States
BMO Tower is a 51-story office building rising 727 feet (221 meters) above Canal Street with glass exterior walls and distinctive V-shaped structural supports. The tower features a terraced design where the upper floors step back progressively from the street.
Construction started in December 2019 on the site of a former parking lot managed by Amtrak, and the building was topped out in April 2021 when the final steel beam was installed. The tower transformed an underutilized location into a prominent address.
The public ground-level park serves as a gathering space where workers and neighbors meet for events, outdoor fitness classes, and musical performances. People use the area as a green break from the surrounding urban environment.
The tower connects directly to Union Station through a covered walkway, providing easy access to Metra commuter trains and Amtrak long-distance service. This direct connection is convenient when using public transportation or visiting during rainy or cold weather.
The tower holds the distinction of being the tallest building constructed west of Canal Street, representing a major shift in development for this neighborhood. Its placement on the former Amtrak site continues to influence how people move through and experience the area.
