Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic Church and Cemetery
Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic Church and Cemetery, Historic Roman Catholic church and cemetery in Honey Creek, Wisconsin, US.
Our Lady of Loretto is a stone church with limestone walls, pointed arch windows, a rose window above the entrance, and an octagonal steeple on the belfry. The cemetery sits beside the building and holds graves dating back to the 1860s.
It was built in 1880 as a mission church for German settlers, replacing an earlier wooden structure that burned down across the road. This new building became an important place for the growing community that needed a permanent home for worship.
Inside you will see original wooden pews and a Gothic altar from Milwaukee, with walls decorated using stenciled patterns of stars, lattice, and tulips. These ornaments show how the community wanted to honor the space with careful handmade details.
This place now operates as a wedding chapel and public museum with regular visiting hours on summer Sundays through the Sauk Prairie Historical Society. Plan your visit during these open hours when knowledgeable guides can explain the building's history and features.
The cemetery holds graves from 1862 onward with wrought iron crosses and stone markers organized by German, Irish, and English family sections. This clear division shows how different immigrant groups wanted to keep their identity even after death.
