Pewits Nest State Natural Area, Protected natural area in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States
Pewits Nest is a protected natural area featuring a deep sandstone gorge carved by Skillet Creek through the landscape. The site includes marked hiking trails that wind through the gorge past rocky formations and flowing water.
The site was once home to a waterwheel and mill operated by early settlers who lived within the sandstone formations. The machinery and dwellings from this period have long since disappeared from the landscape.
The place takes its name from the phoebe bird, once called a peewit, which made its home along these rocky walls. Visitors often notice birds nesting and calling throughout the gorge today.
Designated trails keep visitors safe throughout the gorge, and protective fences mark off-limit areas. Access is restricted during evening and nighttime hours to protect the natural environment.
The gorge contains several potholes and waterfall formations created when glacial waters drained through layers of ancient sandstone millions of years ago. These geological processes shaped the dramatic rock formations visible during a visit.
