Thermopolis Swinging Bridge

The Thermopolis Swinging Bridge is a suspension footbridge spanning the Big Horn River and connecting both sides of Hot Springs State Park. The structure features steel cables and wooden planks that allow visitors to cross the river on foot.

The bridge was built in 1916 to connect thermal springs resorts on opposite sides of the river. This construction provided access to hotels and medical facilities that operated in the area at that time.

This pedestrian crossing represents early 20th-century engineering methods, demonstrating the practical solutions developed for connecting communities separated by the Big Horn River.

The crossing is straightforward to access and offers a direct pedestrian route between both park areas. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear and exercise caution during windy conditions.

The builder drew inspiration from a Golden Gate Bridge postcard and created the structure within an unusually tight budget. The project was completed during a time when such engineering feats were still rare in rural areas.
