Wilhelm Carpelan, Museum ship and minesweeper in Turku, Finland
The Wilhelm Carpelan is a former minesweeper vessel now operating as a museum ship in Turku. This naval craft was designed for coastal defense duties and served the Finnish Navy for decades before joining the maritime museum.
Built in 1915 for the Imperial Russian Navy under the name S1 Shrapnell, the vessel was taken over by Finland after World War One. It served the Finnish Navy until 1977, when it was eventually transferred to the maritime museum.
The ship's name honors the Carpelan family, a Finnish noble lineage with deep roots in the region. Walking through the vessel offers visitors insights into this family's place in local history and their significance to the city.
Access to the vessel is via a simple gangway and the interior is quite compact, so visitors should expect narrow passages and confined spaces. The best time to visit is during the warmer months when all areas of the ship are fully accessible.
During its time in private ownership, parts of the vessel were refitted with palisander wood salvaged from another ship, adding an unexpected touch of refinement to the interior. This renovation work remains visible today and represents an intriguing chapter in its life after leaving active service.
