Tyrsky, torpedo boat
Tyrsky is a Taisto class motor torpedo boat completed in 1943 and now moored at Forum Marinum museum in Turku. The vessel measures about 18 meters in length and was equipped with two torpedo tubes and a small gun for defense.
Tyrsky was built in 1943 at the Turun Veneveistämö shipyard and served the Finnish Navy during World War II. After the 1947 peace treaty banned torpedo-carrying vessels, the boat was converted into an armed gunboat, then retired in the mid-1960s.
The name Tyrsky reflects Finnish naval heritage, and the boat demonstrates how wartime vessels were designed for compact, efficient operation. Visitors can see where sailors worked and lived in tight quarters during their service.
The boat is typically moored in the Aura River during summer months from June through mid-August and is open for visitors to explore. You can walk on deck and look inside the cabins to get a sense of how sailors lived and worked on board.
Tyrsky was one of only eight boats of its class built between 1943 and 1946, making it a rare example of how small warships could deliver quick strikes and disappear. Its streamlined hull was specifically designed to approach targets at high speed and retreat just as fast.
