Karjala, Museum ship in Turku, Finland
Karjala is a Finnish gunboat turned museum ship, moored at the mouth of the Aura River in Turku, Finland. It is part of the Forum Marinum maritime museum complex and sits alongside other historic vessels at the riverbank.
Karjala was built in 1969 at the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki and served the Finnish Navy for over thirty years. After being decommissioned in 2002, it was preserved and opened to the public as a museum ship.
The name Karjala refers to the Karelia region, a historically charged area that has long shaped Finnish identity. Walking through the crew quarters and engine room gives a direct sense of what daily life looked like for sailors on active duty.
The ship is accessed through Forum Marinum, located at the mouth of the Aura River in central Turku. Narrow corridors and steep ladders make moving around the vessel slow, so it is worth leaving enough time to visit at a comfortable pace.
The vessel still carries its original weapons from active service, including an automatic 120mm Bofors gun and several 40mm cannons. These are still mounted on deck and can be seen up close, which is rare for a military ship of this size open to the public.
