Keihässalmi

Keihässalmi is a minelayer vessel measuring 56 meters long, powered by two Wärtsilä diesel engines and equipped with anti-aircraft gun positions throughout. Displayed at the Forum Marinum maritime center in Turku, it can be fully explored to understand military naval design and engineering.

Built in Helsinki in 1957, the vessel served as the Finnish Navy's flagship and played a role in post-war naval diplomacy. It made significant voyages that strengthened relations with neighboring countries during a formative period.

The vessel demonstrates Finnish shipbuilding craftsmanship and how the navy applied technology over many decades. Visitors can see how spaces were designed for daily work and command operations, reflecting the practical needs of crew members.

The vessel is open to visitors during the summer season at the Forum Marinum maritime center. Wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to climb stairs and explore the different deck levels throughout the ship.

The vessel underwent a major overhaul in 1981, receiving updated fire control systems and additional ballast capacity for improved handling in rough seas. This modernization extended its operational usefulness during the later years of service.
