Metrocable, Aerial tramway network in Medellín, Colombia.

The Metrocable is a network of aerial cable cars in Medellín that connects steep hillside neighborhoods on the city's edge with the central metro line. The gondolas travel suspended above the city, forming six operating lines that carry roughly 30,000 passengers daily.

The Metrocable opened in 2004 as the first use of cable cars for mass transit in South America. This project changed how large cities in the region connect hilly areas with public transportation.

The cable car connects residents of steep hillside neighborhoods with jobs and schools in the city through journeys that previously took hours on foot. Today the ride has become part of daily routine for many people living in the mountains who travel down into the city each day.

The system works like regular metro transit: buy a ticket at stations and ride directly up or down the hillside. The cable cars are bright and highly visible from the street, making it easy to locate stations and understand where the journey leads.

The rides compress journeys that previously took 2.5 hours into about 30 minutes, saving residents of upper neighborhoods significant time daily. This time gain allowed thousands to expand their working hours and reshape their lives.
