Lagoa das Araras, Natural lake reserve in Nobres, Brazil.
Lagoa das Araras is a freshwater lake in the Mato Grosso region surrounded by dead Buriti palms and wetlands. The lake sits at the boundary between Cerrado savanna and Amazon rainforest, providing habitat for various bird species.
The lake formed naturally through geological processes in the Mato Grosso region and created an ecosystem suited to macaw species. Dead palm trunks provide natural nesting cavities that these birds have used for generations.
Local communities maintain the preservation of this natural sanctuary, where various macaw species find refuge and establish their nesting grounds.
A short walking trail of about 200 meters leads from the nearby village to observation platforms at the lake. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when light conditions are ideal and bird activity is high.
Large flocks of macaws return to their nesting sites in hollow palm trunks at sunset. This daily ritual creates a striking natural display as the birds arrive in colorful flight.
