Dante's Tomb

Dante's Tomb is a neoclassical temple with a square base and small dome located in Ravenna. Inside sits a marble sarcophagus holding the remains of the famous poet Dante Alighieri.

The current tomb building was constructed in 1781 by architect Camillo Morigia above a 15th-century burial site. That earlier burial place had been created at the request of Cardinal Luigi Valenti Gonzaga.

The site is named after the great Italian poet and draws visitors who want to understand his literary legacy. The simple design reflects the deep respect people have for one of Europe's most influential writers.

The tomb sits near the adjoining Quadrarco gardens, which are easy to reach on foot. It helps to allow yourself time to explore both the burial chamber and the surrounding grounds at a leisurely pace.

An iron gate designed by Umberto Bellotto in 1921 frames the garden with an intriguing backstory. This wrought-iron piece displays artistic details that many visitors walk past without noticing.
