Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum
The Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum is a natural history museum in Vernal that focuses on dinosaurs and Earth's past. The building contains skeletons like a 90-foot-long Diplodocus, a Fossil Lab, a Jurassic Hall with dinosaurs from 150 million years ago, and an Eocene Gallery with fossilized plants, as well as a Fluorescent Minerals Room and outdoors a Dinosaur Garden with 14 life-sized models.
The museum opened in 1948 to share local fossils and knowledge with the public. The region around Vernal lies in the Uinta Basin, an area with particularly rich fossil deposits from different geological periods.
The museum displays artifacts from the Fremont and Ute cultures who inhabited this region. These exhibits give visitors a sense of the craftsmanship and daily life of the original inhabitants who lived in this area.
The museum is open year-round and accessible from morning until late afternoon. Entry costs a small fee, and there is free parking directly in front of the building for visitors.
A highlight is the Fluorescent Minerals Room, where rocks appear ordinary in regular light but glow with vibrant colors under ultraviolet light. This unique space offers a visual experience that visitors rarely encounter in other museums.
