Nishinomaru Garden, Garden in Osaka Castle Park, Osaka, Japan
Nishinomaru Garden is a lawn garden of about 6.5 hectares inside Osaka Castle Park, facing the main tower across an inner moat. It is crossed by paths that lead past a central grass area, rows of cherry trees, and a teahouse on the northeast side.
The western bailey was once the site of a residence for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's wife, Kita no Mandokoro, and later held another keep built under Tokugawa Ieyasu. The present garden opened in 1965 as a lawn space, and the teahouse was donated in 1969.
During the cherry blossom season, people spread out on the grass and sit along the moat to spend the day under the trees. The Hoshoan teahouse, a wooden building in a quiet corner, keeps the custom of tea visible to anyone who passes.
The garden has a single public entrance near the Ote Gate, and the opposite gates remain closed. Once inside, the flat grass area and benches make it easy to walk around or sit for a while without rushing.
From inside, visitors can see the rear side of the Sengan Turret and the Inui Turret, where no openings for attacking were built. The garden also has a fireworks storehouse called Enshozo that is not visible from other parts of the park.
