The Grand Egyptian Museum GEM

The Grand Egyptian Museum GEM, Archaeological museum near Giza pyramids, Egypt

The Grand Egyptian Museum is a collection of objects from ancient Egypt located between modern Cairo and the famous Giza pyramids. The building is designed with contemporary architecture, yet it is organized around how it displays royal tombs, everyday items, and religious artworks spanning thousands of years.

Plans for this project began after 2000, as Egypt needed a larger space to house its archaeological treasures. The opening occurred in the 2020s, making it the world's largest museum of its kind.

The museum reveals how ancient Egyptians honored their rulers and gods through statues, amulets, and ritual objects displayed throughout the halls. The way these items are arranged helps visitors understand the role that religion and royal power held in everyday life.

The museum has paths and areas that are relatively easy to navigate despite its large size, though spending time exploring is worthwhile. It is practical to wear comfortable shoes and arrive early in the morning when there are fewer visitors.

The collection includes the complete burial goods of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, many of which are being shown to the public for the first time. These items offer an unusually detailed view of how a king was buried in ancient times and what was placed with him for the afterlife.
