Side Ancient City, Archaeological ruins near Mediterranean coast in Antalya, Turkey

Side is an ancient city on a peninsula near the Mediterranean coast in Antalya, with stone streets leading past temples, monuments, and gates. A large Roman theater dominates the site, rising prominently across the landscape.

The city was founded in the 7th century BC and grew from a Lydian settlement into a major Roman port city. It later declined due to raids and shifts in trade routes.

The archaeological museum in the restored Roman baths displays sculptures, pottery, and architectural pieces from the different peoples who lived in Side. Walking through the exhibits, you see objects from various periods that show how many cultures shaped this place.

Access to the ruins is well organized through marked pathways, with informational signs at many locations. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain.

The theater was built using an artificial inclined plane to support the upper seating rows rather than a traditional foundation structure. This approach shows how Roman architects adapted to the local conditions.
