Cataratas dos Couros
Cataratas dos Couros is a waterfall in Alto Paraíso de Goiás that cascades down through multiple tiers, forming natural pools below. The water flows over smooth rock faces, creating a series of smaller drops where visitors can wade and swim.
The waterfall formed over millennia through water erosion of the local rock formations in this region. This ongoing natural process shaped the cascades and pools that visitors see today.
Access is via a hiking trail from town that leads down to the waterfall with some steep sections. The water is deepest at the base of the cascades and becomes shallower as you move upstream, so start in the lower pools if you want to swim.
The name "Couros" refers to the smooth rock surface that resembles leather, polished by water over time. This unique stone structure makes the area particularly slippery on sunny days and gives the site its distinctive character.
