Nandan Kanan Zoo Safari, Wildlife safari park in Chandaka, India
Nandan Kanan Zoo Safari is a wildlife park set in the forested area of Chandaka, India, combining enclosed animal sections with open safari zones. Visitors can drive or ride through parts of the grounds, watching animals in half-open settings that feel closer to their natural habitat.
The park was set up in 1960 and first opened to the public in 1979. In 2009, it became the first zoo in India to join the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The name Nandan Kanan comes from Sanskrit and means roughly 'Garden of Heaven'. Walking through the grounds, you notice how planted gardens and animal spaces flow into each other without clear boundaries.
The park sits in a forested area outside the city, so having your own vehicle or joining an organized transfer makes getting there easier. Once inside, small trains and golf carts are available to move between sections without having to walk the entire way.
The park runs a breeding program for white tigers, a coloring that is extremely rare in the wild. It was among the first facilities in the world to breed these animals in captivity with consistent success.
