Nandan Kanan Zoo Safari, Wildlife safari park in Chandaka, India
Nandankanan Zoological Park is a large wildlife facility spanning around 437 hectares in Chandaka with animals displayed in both enclosed areas and open safari zones. The layout combines traditional zoo sections with drive-through experiences where you see animals in more open settings.
The park was established in 1960 and first opened to visitors in 1979, making it one of India's earlier zoo projects. International recognition came in 2009 when it became the first Indian zoo to join the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The name comes from Sanskrit words meaning 'Garden of Heaven', showing how Indian culture links paradise with natural spaces. You notice this in how the grounds blend gardens and wildlife areas together as one flowing landscape.
The location in a forested area means having your own vehicle or using organized transport is most practical for reaching the park. Within the grounds, you can use small trains or golf carts to move between sections without walking long distances.
The park runs specialized breeding programs for rare species and houses animal types that are seldom seen in captivity elsewhere. This means visitors can observe creatures that are not commonly available for viewing outside of a few select facilities.
