Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve, Nature reserve and archaeological site in Cayo District, Belize.

Nohoch Che'en is a protected reserve containing roughly 19 limestone caves where the Caves Branch River flows through underground tunnels and chambers. The system features areas with ancient Maya paintings on the ceilings and water passages inhabited by eyeless fish that have adapted to complete darkness.

The Maya used this cave system for ritual and ceremonial purposes, leaving evidence of activities that spanned many generations. The site was officially protected as an archaeological reserve in 2009 to safeguard this important location.

The caves held deep spiritual meaning for the Maya, who used them for ceremonies and left marks of their presence that visitors still see today. Walking through these passages connects you directly to practices that took place here centuries ago.

It is best to visit with a local guide, as the caves are dark and pathways vary in difficulty and terrain. Waterproof shoes and a light jacket are recommended, since conditions inside are cool and damp with stretches of wading through water.

Fish have adapted to life in complete darkness by developing without eyes, instead relying on other senses to navigate these underground waters. This adaptation reveals how creatures can transform when living in extreme conditions.
