Guanacaste National Park, National park in Cayo District, Belize.
Guanacaste National Park is a protected forest area in Cayo District where towering guanacaste trees and Honduras mahogany grow alongside many other plant species. The park is crisscrossed with walking trails that take visitors through tropical woodland and reveal the diversity of plants that thrive in this region.
The land was designated a Crown Reserve in 1973 and received national park status in 1990. Management passed to the Belize Audubon Society in 2004.
The park functions as an educational center where visitors learn about Belizean wildlife and environmental conservation through guided programs and exhibitions.
The park sits west of Belize City along the Western Highway and is reachable by car or taxi. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trails run through open forest under strong sun.
The forest canopy is home to over 100 bird species, ranging from trogons to woodpeckers. Birdwatchers can spot rare species here that are difficult to see elsewhere.
