Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve

Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve covers 66,000 hectares of rocky outcrops rising from dry grasslands and semi-desert steppe in southeastern Mongolia. The land shows bare rock formations, rolling grass plains, and low vegetation typical of this high plateau.

The area became a protected reserve in 1996 to safeguard its natural resources and archaeological heritage. Ancient rock carvings scattered across the terrain document thousands of years of human occupation in this region.

Herding families practice their time-honored customs across the grasslands, using the land much as their ancestors did. This way of life shapes how the landscape looks and functions in daily rhythm.

Vehicle travel is the practical way to explore due to long distances and rough terrain. Staying at traditional ger camps nearby provides a base for viewing rock formations and watching wildlife.

The reserve hosts 125 bird species and 33 mammal species including the rare Asiatic wild ass and the impressive argali sheep. Many of these animals are difficult to spot, yet visitors often get unexpected glimpses in the open landscape.
