Khamar Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Dornogovi Province, Mongolia.
Khamar Monastery is a Buddhist sanctuary in Dornogovi Province organized into four main sections: East Khuree, West Khuree, Tsokhon, and Duinkher. Meditation caves in the northern zone provide spaces for traditional spiritual practices at this site.
The monastery was founded in 1820 by Danzanravjaa and became an important Buddhist center in the region. The site was destroyed in 1937 during religious persecution but was rebuilt and restored starting in 1990.
The monastery served as a center for arts and education, hosting a school for children that taught Mongolian literature, Tibetan language, mathematics, and natural sciences. These spaces combined spiritual practice with cultural learning for the surrounding community.
The monastery is located about 47 kilometers south of Sainshand, making it accessible from the city as a day trip or longer excursion. Visitors should prepare for the dry desert setting and allow time to explore the multiple sections and cave areas at a comfortable pace.
The monastery housed a professional theater school that trained artists and staged regular performances throughout the Gobi region. This artistic activity made the site a cultural hub that extended well beyond religious practice alone.
