Great Mosque of Hohhot, Islamic monument in Huimin District, Hohhot, China.
The Great Mosque of Hohhot is an Islamic place of worship built with Chinese architectural style, located at the intersection of Zhongshan Lu and Tongdao Jie streets. The complex includes a prayer hall, a black-brick minaret, and various supporting structures spread across approximately 4000 square meters.
This place of worship was founded in 1693 by Hui merchants and became a religious center for the region. Major renovations took place in 1789 and 1923 to maintain its structure and continue its role as a gathering place for prayer.
The mosque blends Chinese architectural elements with Islamic design, showing how the Hui community has integrated their faith into local building traditions. Walking through the space, you can see how this combination shapes the appearance and reflects the identity of the people who worship here.
The site has multiple sections including a prayer hall and public bath that visitors can explore. It helps to enter from the main gate at the street intersection and allow time to see the different parts of the complex.
A roughly 200-year-old Arabic Koran manuscript with 30 volumes is one of the most precious objects kept here. This rare work has been preserved as a treasure and reflects the deep connection between the community and Islamic scholarship.
