Chunyang Gong

Chunyang Gong is a temple in Datong built directly into a cliff face, rising about 75 meters above ground level. The structure consists of many halls and pavilions joined together with oak beams and iron reinforcements.

The site was founded during the Northern Wei Dynasty in 491 and has combined architectural elements from Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism since that time. Over 1500 years, the temple has maintained and developed this religious blend.

The temple displays symbols and figures that blend Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism together on its walls. Visitors can observe how these three traditions coexist in the daily life of the place.

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when weather conditions are most favorable for exploring the cliff-attached structure. The pathways through the different levels require careful attention, so sturdy footwear is important.

The temple is supported by a system of 27 wooden beams inserted directly into the rock face, which hold the entire structure. This construction system has proven itself over centuries and remains striking in its simplicity.
